Dr. Xinying Hong has made seminal contributions in the area of newborn screening expansion over the past several years. She has developed newborn screening for metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) from assay development to assay implementation. She has proven how liquid-chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry can be used in a high-throughput newborn screening laboratory without technical issues. She has shown how this technique can be used to multiplex the newborn screening of up to 20 diseases in a single 2 min analytical run that works well in a newborn screening laboratory. Her introduction of liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry into population-based newborn screening programs will massively improve biochemical newborn screening for decades to come.
