Giancarlo la Marca

Recipient of the Jean Dussault Medal 2014

Dr. Giancarlo la Marca received a doctorate degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology from the University of Florence, Italy followed by a specialization in Pharmacy at the same university.. Dr. La Marca is currently an Assistant Professor of Pharmacology and an Associate Professor of Clinical Chemistry at the University of Florence and he serves as the Deputy Head of the Newborn Screening, Clinical Chemistry and Pharmacology Laboratory, at Meyer Children’s Hospital in Florence, Italy.

Dr. La Marca’s main research interest is in improving newborn screening by developing new strategies to identify novel conditions and to decrease false positive results. He has been a pioneer for the expansion of newborn screening in Italy. His program is responsible for the screening of all newborns in several regions of Italy. He has also been very active in training and helping other regions to implement tandem mass spectrometry in their newborn screening laboratories.

He has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications dealing with areas of pharmacology, clinical chemistry, mass spectrometry, and pediatrics. He has also authored 5 patents. Many of his innovations have been adopted by laboratories around the world.

He is the recipient of several awards in the area of paediatric preventive medicine and early diagnosis of ADA SCID.

During ISNS2016 Dr la Marca received the Dussault Medal itself from ISNS President Dr Veronica Wiley, in the presence of Mrs Houria El Mouden (Bio-Rad).
